Cdv Maximo & Bartola - Aztec Barnum Circus Theatre Freaks Victorian:
A carte de visite photograph of Maximo and Bartola, taken circa 1867 by the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company.
Maximo and Bartola were a brother and sister who were exhibited in London and in America as the last two survivors of the Aztec civilisation. In reality, the pair’s appearance was because of microcephaly and they had been bought from their parents in Mexico by a showman. At the time this photograph was taken they were performing in London at St. Martin’s Great Hall and the circus at the Royal Aquarium. They were also employed by Barnum. It seems the audience was not told the couple were related, and in a bizarre publicity stunt the siblings were legally married in London in 1867 at Hanover Square.
The card area measures 4 inches by just under 2½ inches.
Condition: A couple of marks and some fading. Good condition. Please see picture below.
