FREIGHT MONEY transatlantic ship letter Charleston SC April 23 1841

Sent aboard the Steamship Great Western which sailed from New York May 1 1841 and arrived at Bristol May 14

\'Freight money\' ship mail began in 1838 and lasted until 1847. Individual post offices made arrangement with the New York postmaster & private ship agents in New York for the transmission ofpost officepre-paidtransatlantic letters that included the fee charged by private vessels sailing from New York to the United Kingdom. The charge was 25 cents for single rate letters via steamships and 12 1/2cents via sailing ships.

In the United States the arrangement was handled by individual postmasters in a number of major cities/towns, while in Canada the arrangement was overseen by the Deputy postmaster for all of Upper and Lower Canada. Examples of freight money letters exist for many small towns and villages in Canada while in the United States the arrangement was limited to major centers such asPhiladelphia (the first with this arrangement) , Charleston, Baltimore, New Orleans, Auburn NY, Hartford, Norfolk Va, Richmond Va, Portsmouth NH , a just a few others. .

Geo S. Cameron to Alexander Johnston, Greenock N.B. (N.B. as in North Britain = Scotland)

Contains a \'duplicate letter\' of a letter previously sent via the ship Acadia April 9 1841. The other half of the lettersheet which would have had the letter of April 23, is missing (referred to in the receiver\'s docketing on the cover sheet, historically separated for filing orpossibly removed at some point by a collector to make the folded letter less bulky-- an unfortunate practice in the early days of postal history collecting)

This duplicate letter of April 9 refers to previous letters sent by the ship British Queen and Caledonia and refers to a draw of£1,000 for 400 bales of cotton.
