Charming Royal Doulton \"SIBELL\" HN1735 - very elegant and very, very RARE:
$275.25

Royal Doulton\'s sophisticated 18th century \"Sibell\" was modelled by Leslie Harradine, arguably the finest artist who ever worked for Doulton. Most of his creations were based on a variety of images which inspired him...be they calendar or magazine illustrations, original illustrations from classic novels or plays, or even costumed models he photographed.\"Sibell\" was issued in 3 different colourways but this blue and white version, HN 1735, seems to be the rarest. It was issued from 1935 - 1949 but this one is from the first year of production, which probably accounts for the crispness of detail.
The figurine is 16.5cm tall (6½\")The painting of this piece is typical of the effort the decorators applied to early Doultons...the shading of the skirt from palest pink into that fresh, minty green is charming. And how long would it have taken to hand-paint all those blue spots on the gown?! For historic fashion buffs, I\'m sure this is meant to be a \'sack-back gown\' or \'robe à la française\' which was a fashion of the 18th century.I have included a scan of the entry of this figurine in the last Charlton\'s price guide for Royal Doulton figurines, where you\'ll notice its value was listed as US$1,750 so it\'s one of the vintage figurines worth considering for its investment value apart from its decorative value!Condition: This figurine is in excellent condition. I should point out, however, that there is some very fine crazing, confined mainly to the base and the folds in the gown where the glaze is slightly thicker, but it is absolutely micro-crazing...so minute you\'d not have noticed it if I hadn\'t mentioned it, but I\'m just noting it for accuracy. There are also two very, very fine, short hairlines on either side of the air-hole in the base...again, so small I only saw them when I had taken the photo of the base with the macro lens. You\'ll be hard-pressed to even see them in the magnified photo. These hairlines on either side of the air-hole are very common in old Doulton figurines and are in no way ominous.
(Please note that the vast majority of Doulton sellers would not have even noticed these insignificant issues, let alone mentioned them. I just happen to believe in scrupulous honesty in selling and always examine my items in sunlight so as to pick up anything amiss.)
Also, please ignore any white reflections from the camera\'s flash.Shipping: I pack extremely well, using only the best packing materials...stacks of bubble-wrap and packing peanuts for the safest packaging. Postage within Australia for this item is FREE and includes tracking and insurance. Pickup from 3122 for cash payment is fine, too.
