RARE c1890 CHINESE EXPORT SILVER PRUNUS FLOWER ON STAIN TEA CADDY; ORIGINAL GOLD INTERIOR; SIGNED MAKER "SC' "85" AND CHINESE CHARACTERS
We are pleased to offer this extremely rare Chinese export silver prunus tea caddy.
Extremely crisp well struck hallmarks for maker SC. This shop is not recorded, as yet in any of the CES reference texts.
From our personal collection of several hundred pieces of CES. Most acquired in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Trade silver prices have exploded in the past year. As evidenced by Skinners Boston sales in Fall 2010. There a pair of 4 1/4 inches vases for $2000. Later in 2011 a common, damaged 20 ounce CES tea set sold for $6800 USD at Halls Gallery in the UK. A slightly larger, damaged, mismatched set sold at Christie's London this past winter for $7200.
As trade silver prices soar, we have been unwilling to sell the best pieces of our personal collection.
Until this past month. When a tiny, twenty one ounce CES tea service, with damaged enamel work sold for 35,000 GBP plus premium ($70,000 USD).
In classic circular form. Perfectly fit cover, topped with smooth surface globe finial
All over prunus leaf and flower sprays to both cover and base. Finest hand chased finish detail.
The prunus atop rich stippled background. Like satin to the touch.
Original rich glistening gold interior.
Chinese prunus tea caddy is 3 inches across and weighs 3 1/4 standard ounces.
Hallmarked as shown.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout. The beautiful carved prunus retain their original crisp, vibrant detail. Cover well fit. Interior gold was as original. Associated stand included.
For the discerning collector of the finest China trade silver. Focused upon the most rare makers. A museum worthy, c1890 China trade silver prunus on satin background tea caddy. From unrecorded maker SC.
Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set. We very much welcome your interest. We are collectors first. As such, we are quite easy to work with.
We happily combine items when shipping, saving you costs. We ship twice weekly, usually US Postal Priority. Fully insured for domestic packages, and air parcel overseas. We charge a bit more than actual cost for custom size boxes, shipping materials and to pay for professional packing.
We make great effort to accurately describe each item listed. Returns are accepted, if either condition, country of origin or dating is significantly incorrect. In such cases we refund your shipping costs as well. Like you, we are only human, and make mistakes. Hopefully, not too many.
Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand.
Please note, Massachusetts residents are subject to sales tax.
