Chinese Scroll By Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione)

White Falcon Reproduction

This is a reproduction from the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan of a painting of a white falcon by the Italian jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione, known by his Chinese name, Lang Shih-ning. He died in 1766. The original painting can be dated 1765.

In all probability, the white falcon was painted by Castiglione, while the background may have been painted by someone else in the imperial painting academy. At any rate, the background is pure fantasy.

The text on the outside of the scroll reads “Painting of white eagle by Lang Shih-ning.”

Reading the seals and the texts in counter-clockwise order from the upper-left corner, these could be possible translations:

The six seals in a cluster include a round/oval seal at the top and is a Ch\'ien Lung seal.

The two seals at left-middle show a seal of the Hall of the Three Rarities, which Ch\'ien-lung used on his collection.

The text in the upper-right corner evidently shows a poemwritten by the Ch\'ien-lung emperor, called \"The Ballad of the White Falcon” with calligraphy by Chi Huang.

The singleseal high-middle-right shows the seal of the Ch\'ien-ch\'ing palace and says something like \"Treasure of the Ch\'ien-ch\'ing Palace.”

The threeseals low-middle-right include a round/oval seal at top which is a Ch\'ien-lung seal.

The text in the lower-right corner records that \"On the 10th day of the intercalary fifth month of the 10th year of Ch\'ien-lung, the loyal and brave duke Fu Heng presented (the emperor) with a white falcon and the Westerner Lang Shining was ordered to depict it.\" The tenth year of Ch\'ien-lung would be about 1746. He ascended the throne in 1736. A different record says the falcon was presented in 1751.

The scroll appears to be in excellent condition. It should be kept and displayed in a humidity-controlled setting to avoid becoming too dry. The scroll measures approximately 93” (236 cm) in length and 30” (76 cm) in width.
