The Manchu Dynasty and Yat-sen Republic Silver Dollars were minted as official coin of the realm during the turbulent period in which China transformed itself from an empire into a republic. In a very real sense, these coins reflect the changing influences and value of the period.
Manchu Dynasty Silver Dollar
The powerful Western influence on turn-of-the-century China is quite evident on the \"Side-View Dragon\" Manchu Dollar both the English and Chinese languages appear on the coin. The Manchu Dynasty Dollar is dated by year according to the regional period in which the coin was minted. For example, the \"kuang Hsu\" era began in 1875, so a coin minted in 1908 bears the legend, \"34th Year of Huang Hsu.\" the one year discrepancy is due to the fact thatthe first year is included in the elapsed time (1875 + 34 - 1 = 1908).
Sun Yat-Sen Silver Dollar
Although the name of Sun Yat-sen is not recognized widely in the Western Hemisphere, his influence on 20th century Chinese history is substantial. Sun engineered the overthrow of the Manchus (The last Chinese Dynasty), helped found the new republic, and organized the famous Kuomintang party.
The Sun Yat-Sen Commemorative Silver Dollar was issued in the mid-1930\'s by the Republic of China. In contrast to the ornate \"Imperial Dragon\" design of the Manchu Dollar, this coin bears only a profile of the sun on the obverse and a common Chinese Junk on the reverse. The simplicity of the design and elimination of the English text are a reflection of China\'s new identity as a republic.
