MAGNIFICENTANTIQUE CHINESEINCISED TIANBAI MOONFLASK
MingDynasty, Yongle Period(1360-1424), Museum Quality
Exceedingly rareChineseMing Dynasty moonflask. Absolutely spectacular presence, with a strong rounded body andwell formed neck, covered overall with a silky, smooth 'sweet white' (tianbai) glaze.Finely incised around the body with a lively three clawed dragonsurrounded by flaming clouds. The decoration was incised with a very fine point into the body, beneath the glaze. It is only if the viewer has the privilege of handling the vase that they can fully appreciate the decoration. Markedat the collar, just below the neck, withthe four character Yongle mark in incised seal script.
Similarly adorned moon flasks from the Yongle Period, however more commonly decoratedin underglaze blue, are found in some of the world's most prestigious museums, including The Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Palace Museum in Taipei. In 2011, Sotheby's offered one of these blue and white moon flasks as a premium lot with a valuation of USD$6-$10 Million. Tianbai works are highly sought after, and rarely come on the open market. The Yongle emperor had a particular fondness for white, especially white jade and white porcelain. It is probably this imperial preference that inspired the development of tianbai glaze. A handsomely incised example of Yongle tianbai ware was sold at Sotheby's in 2017, and may be viewed museum acquisition or the collector who is seeking one of the most tasteful examples of Chinese Moon Flasks in the world. Thisexquisite, museum quality moonflask is in excellent antique condition bearing just very minor wear commensurate with age. It is of significant size and measures approximately 12.5 inches tall and9 inches across. Quite heavy and solidly potted. Beautiful from every angle with an elegant contour.
