The Bohemian Club, San FranciscoJames Everett Stuart (1852-1941)
Yellowstone Park ~ August 16, 1885
Stuart was a founding member of San Francisco's cigar smoking Bohemian Club and thispainting was painted on the lid of an extremely *rare and expensive cigar box from a San Francisco Tobacco company. The box was a large 16" size which suggests a compartmentalized-variety 'gift' box ...a gift fromthe Club?
"Lone Star Geyser. Yellowstone N.P."Oil on wood. Stuart had been hikingformore thantwo monthsby the time hereached Lone Star. The geyser is in a remote area of the park and the well-dressed Victorian figures are most-certainly fictitious, added for scale. This painting tells the story of a resourcefulearly American explorer who, aftertromping throughthe wilderness for months, and, after smokingthe last of his cigars, dismantled the box and used it ashiscanvas.A great piece of American history and one of the earliestknown depictions of Lone Star.
A number of U.S. presidents were/are members of The Bohemian Club and The White House is just one of severalinstitution's that hold Stuart's work. The actual painting (the cigar box lid) measures 16" by 9 1/4". Measures about 14" by 20" to outside of period frame.Shipping will be $14.95 to any U.S. address ($35.00 foreign).
