Civil War Ambrotype. I.d.'d Confederate Navy Officer With Letter And Envelope. For Sale
This is a sixth plate ambrotype photo of who I believe to be Captain John T. Shirley. He was a Mississippi River boat Captain and contractor before and during the Civil War. He was the man initially appointed to build the ironclads CSS Arkansas, and CSS Tennessee. This image came out of the home of a CS Navy Lieutenant assigned to help Capt. Shirley. The image had a handwritten sympathy note from him to Lieutenant Hicks' mother concerning Hicks' death that I will also include. Both the image and letter were found together.
The image is very clear. He is wearing a navy uniform jacket that has had the buttons hand painted with gold leaf type paint. Over this he has his deck coat or overcoat. The case is only in fair shape. The hinge cloth is worn and there is some minor exterior damage. Please examine the photos for condition as they will stand for the true description of the condition better than I can put into words. Feel free to ask questions.
I have added a photo of Captain Shirley's letter. Unfortunately it was written in pencil and his writing left something to be desired and I haven't been able to decipher all of it. Just bits and words here and there like who it is to, and words of sympathy here and there and his name at the bottom. Also included is the postal cover (envelope) with Mrs. Martha Hicks, Vicksburg written on the front.
