Civil War ambrotype of soldier -- Troy NY -- Schoonmaker 282 River Street
Very nice ambrotype of a civil war soldier.
The case is marked "Schoonmakers, 282 River Street, Troy NY" so we can assume this
young soldier was from Troy (or at least Rensselaer County)
and had this photo created in the days before he went off to war, most likely 1861-1862.

The soldier has all his buttons tinted with gold and is posed wearing his hat, and possibly a knife in his belt.
The ambrotype is of 9th plate size, (2" by 2 1/2"), and is housed in a leather case with an embossed geometric design. The red velvet pad bears the name of the photography studio, Schoonmakers, River Street, Troy New York. Studio embossed pads are themselves somewhat rare, and collectable in their own right.
The ambrotype appears to be in fine shape. The case is in nice shapeand has had its leather spine rebound. The single latch is intact and works fine. The red velvet pad is in excellent condition. No chips or cracks.
