CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE MOSS SADDLE BLANKET FRAGMENTS FROM MOSS IN DISPLAYTHIS sale HAS VERY FINE GLASS DISPLAY BOX 6 1/4" X 8 1/4" IN SIZE. IT CONTAINS AN ITEM THAT IS VERY RARE, FRAGMENTS FROM A MOSS CONFEDERATE SADDLE BLANKET.
THE MOSS FRAGMENT IS 2 1/2" 3 1/4"
IN SIZE, AT ITS WIDEST POINTS."THESE WOVEN FRAGMENTS OF A WOVEN MOSS SADDLE BLANKET WERE RECOVERED IN 1995, DURING EXCAVATIONS IN NASHVILLE, TENN.. MOSS BLANKETS WERE PURCHASED BY THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT AS SUBSTITUTES FOR COSTLY WOOLEN BLANKETS, HAND-WOVEN FROM CURED MOSS FIBERS, THESE BLANKETS SERVED WELL AS BLANKETS FOR CAVALRY AND ARTILLERY UNITS.
MOSS BLANKETS WERE MADE IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE CONFEDERACY, BUT MANY BLANKETS MADE IT TO SUPPLY DEPOTS IN RICHMOND AS WELL. THESE FRAGMENTS ARE FROM THE ONLY KNOWN SOURCE OF CONFEDERATE MOSS BLANKETS EVER FOUND.
