Document box from early 19th century including “slave bill of sale” to the Goff family. This wonderful collection includes the following;

1. Slave “Daniel” Bill of sale from “John Macabe,” to illiam Goff dates 1823. Framed document witnessed and signed by R. Smith. Says he Daniel “loves Christmas”!

2. Slave Bill of sale for, “Lacindas”, Negro girl for $272.00 on 3/4/1848.

3. Slave bill of sale for, “Allen”. 12 years old, to William Goff for $340.00 on 7/10/1832. Purchased from Maston Cape.

4. Civil War exemption “1862”, due to age 45.

William Goff was born in VA 1790, worked in lead mine in 1811. He was a solider in 1812.

He was the first settler in Washington County, MO Married to Polly Ann Simms. William dies in 1873. Buried in Goff Cemetery, Union, Missouri Township.

The 1850 Washington County Slave schedule lists William Goff as owning six slaves.

1 at 80 yrs old

2 st 40 yrs old

1 at 22 yrs old

1 at 18 yrs old

1 at 2 yrs old.

Grouping includes family bible circa 1829. Signed and listing family births.

The letter writing book is circa 1851. Upwards of “50” other family documents and letters. Collection includes family wooden box.
