Civil War Era Peonies & Oak Leaves Antique Applique Quilt For Sale

Civil War Era Peonies & Oak Leaves Antique Applique Quilt

Civil War Era Peonies & Oak Leaves Antique Applique Quilt

You seem to spell romance, dear old quilts of mine

And my thoughts love to dwell on that happy olden time

When deft fingers fashioned flowers, leaves, and baskets, too-

Each year that you are with me I grow more fond of you.

Carlie Sexton

My favorite quilts are ones like this... a handmade pattern, one that a woman put together herself, parts from several of her favorite quilt patterns. When I first started to look up this pattern, I thought that it might be tulips but tulips do not branch out like this & the closest resemblance I found was a peony pattern... that and a unique oak leaf pattern with a coxcomb in the centers. This quilt dates back to the Civil War Era, possibly a bit earlier. Made from old sugar bags, the pale yellow, cheddar & turkey red flowers & leaves were expertly appliqued to a nearly white backing also made from old sugar bags. The fabric is still in wonderful condition. There is no wear & the colors have stood the test of time. You'll see large, spreading oak leaves along with red coxcombs fill the border while large branches of peonies in 3 different stages of blooms span from the corners. Four - 4 petal red & yellow flowers are appliqued in between. This fantastic quilt is still in great condition. There are no stains, rips, tears or holes, and only one small place where some fraying has begun. It's made with a thin layer of batting with cotton seeds present. With the sugar bag backing, you can seethat the thin layer of batting within has spread, or separated a bit. However, it is not bunchy at all. I guess this beauty is entitled tospreada bit after being around over 150 years!

The quilting is as beautiful as the applique ~ Double diagonal linesand feathery oak leaves are quilted in the border. More feathered oak leaves are quilted just inside while a 3/4" grid design completes the body... all neatly done with 9-10 spi.

What wonderful stories this old quilt could tell us if it could! Please take a look at the other quilts I have listed. I'm happy to combine shipping costs for you.

About Me: It all started when I was a little girl.... Gramma gave Mom a piece of Flow Blue that had been passed down in our family, then she would pass it on to me. Gramma knitted, crocheted, & quilted but being a "lefty", I could never get the hang of knitting or crocheting so I learned to quilt & applique. My love of quilts & antiques comes honestly I guess. Iama "collectaholic"so I've had to set new rules for myself... "If I buy one more quilt, one has to be sold". There's just not enough room anymore! Several years ago I decided to leave a 25 year career in Human Resources Management & do something for myself... spend more time with family & friends, garden when this Ohio weather allows, & hunt for quilts, vintage clothing & hats, & other antiques.
