Found on the verso of a one page, 7.75" x 9.75", "Drawing
Div. / Coast Survey Office," February 4, 1858, Lt. Jonathan C.

Following his graduation from West Point in 1847,
Confederate General A.P. Hill (1825-1865) headed south to Mexico and served in
the cavalry during the last months of the Mexican War. Heading east to the
Atlantic coast, he served at the tail end of the Seminole War. From 1855 until
just before the outbreak of the Civil War, Hill worked for the U.S. Coast
Survey. During the war, Hill's Light Division distinguished itself in the Seven
Days Battle, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He
was killed by a Union soldier at Petersburg seven days before Lee surrendered
at Appomattox Court House.
Lemuel Durbin Williams (1831?-1865) was a draughtsman for the U.S. Coast Survey
before accepting a position with the Northwest Boundary Survey Office. When the
Civil War started, Williams joined Co. "A," 2nd Regiment, Washington
Light Infantry, as a first lieutenant, but was quickly promoted to captain of
the company. After his three months expired, Williams mustered out of service.
Inspired by his service, he wrote an early instruction manual titled The
American Illustrated Military Textbook. He died in 1865 after a brief
