Civil War General A. P. Hill Autograph Letter Signed *rare Kia*

Here is a rare and extremely desirable handwritten letter that you can add to your Civil War collection. Signed, "A. P. Hill." Found on the verso of a one page, 7.75" x 9.75", "Drawing Div. / Coast Survey Office," February 4, 1858, Lt. Jonathan C. Lidball praising Lemuel D. Williams for his work which "has been most satisfactorily executed, both in accuracy and neatness." Hill echoes Lidball's sentiment on the verso, in part: "Having been an officer connected with the Coast Survey Office for some two years . . . the opportunity has been presented me of knowing Mr Williams well, and I very cordially endorse the recommendation of Lieut Lidball. I entertain no doubt but that Mr Williams will give complete satisfaction in the execution of any work, original drawings or reductions, and for which his talent peculiarly fits him." Toning along the edges. Both folds are weakened and beginning to separate at the edges.

Also comes with a high quality reproduction 5 X 7 photograph of the General (pictured) made with gloss finish, heavy-weight professional paper with acid free materials to prevent yellowing.

Following his graduation from West Point in 1847, Confederate General A.P. Hill (1825-1865) headed south to Mexico and served in the cavalry during the last months of the Mexican War. Heading east to the Atlantic coast, he served at the tail end of the Seminole War. From 1855 until just before the outbreak of the Civil War, Hill worked for the U.S. Coast Survey. During the war, Hill's Light Division distinguished itself in the Seven Days Battle, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was killed by a Union soldier at Petersburg seven days before Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.

Lemuel Durbin Williams (1831?-1865) was a draughtsman for the U.S. Coast Survey before accepting a position with the Northwest Boundary Survey Office. When the Civil War started, Williams joined Co. "A," 2nd Regiment, Washington Light Infantry, as a first lieutenant, but was quickly promoted to captain of the company. After his three months expired, Williams mustered out of service. Inspired by his service, he wrote an early instruction manual titled The American Illustrated Military Textbook. He died in 1865 after a brief illness.
