For his conspicuous leadershipon July 2, 1863, he was promoted to Major General five days later, becoming General Meade's Chief of Staff. General Grant promoted Humphreys to command of the 2nd Corps in 1864, replacing Winfield Scott Hancock who had been severely wounded at Gettysburg.This attractive one pageletter is to Brigadier General H. L. Abbott transmitting reports.It is dated March 9, 1870, and signedwhile General Humphreys was Chief of Engineers of the Army. Size about 7 3/4" x 9 3/4".
