In 1858 Gibson was engaged in the Battle of Spokane Plain, and two yearslater in the Batt1e of Pyramid Like, while with the Carson Valley Expedition.With the Army of the Potomac, and as a fighting general, he saw service in thePeninsular Campaign, the Siege of Yorktown and the bloody battle of Antietam. Gibsonwas the oldest graduate of West Point at the time ofhis death and sole surviving officer of the Mexican War!

Macnutt spent considerable time atvarious United States foundries and arsenals, becoming a recognized expert onsteel in artillery gunnery. He also served at the Sandy Hook Proving Ground inNew Jersey. Among other bases where he served, MacNutt commanded the BenicaArsenal, the Watervliet Arsenal, and in 1906 he returned to the Sandy HookProving Ground as its commander.

HERE’S A SCARCE INDIAN WARS DATEDOCUMENT SIGNED BY GIBSON AS POST COMMANDER, 1p., FORT WADSWORTH, NY, AUG. 30,1875 – A VOUCHER OF THE STATEN ISLAND RAILROAD FERRY FOR ARMY TRANSPORTAPPROVED BY GIBSON.

THE DOCUMENT IS ALSO SIGNED BY IRA MACNUTT AS 2nd LT., 3rd ARTILLERY, AND JOHN I. STEPHENS, THESECRETARY OF THE STATEN ISLAND RAILWAY FERRY.

The document measures 8½” x 11” and is in Very GoodCondition.

Horatio Gates Gibson

Horatio Gates Gibson (May 22, 1827 – April27, 1924) was a career artillery officer inthe United States Army,and colonelin the American Civil War.In 1866, he was nominated and confirmed for appointment as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers to rank from March 13, 1865.

Biography

Born in Baltimore,Maryland, Gibson attended the UnitedStates Military Academy at West Point, NewYork, and graduated seventeenth in the Class of 1847. Commissionedinto the 3rd Regimentof Artillery, he rose slowly through the peacetime army, eventuallyearning his captaincyat the outbreak of the Civil War.

During the war, he commanded Battery C, 3rd U.S. Artillery, and was part of the famed U.S. HorseArtillery Brigade in the Army of thePotomac. Cited for gallantry, he was awarded brevet (honorary)promotions to major(May 5, 1862, for actions at Williamsburg)and lieutenant colonel (September 17, 1862, for actions at Antietam).By 1863, he accepted a commission in the U.S. Volunteers and commanded the 2ndOhio Artillery as a lieutenant colonel and colonel.At the end of the war, Gibson was awarded a brevet appointment as colonel inthe Regular Army.On January 13, 1866, PresidentAndrew Johnson nominated Gibson forappointment to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865,and the United StatesSenate confirmed the appointment on March 12, 1866.

Mustering out of the volunteers in August 1865, Gibson returned to hispermanent rank of captain in the 3rd Artillery in the regular army. He remainedin the army, and was promoted to major in 1867, lieutenant colonel in 1882, andcolonel in 1883. He retired from the service on May 22, 1891.
