Civil War Letter 1864 General Grant Butler Brooklyn New York Petersburg Antique For Sale
An original Civil War letter dated Brooklyn, N.Y. June 20th 1864. This is a letter written to Liuetenant John Davenport by his father. Some of his writing is a little hard to read, in one area it looks like he says, ............I have too long delayed answering your letter of May 14th in which you were pleased to give us some account of your military life............I trust a kind providence has thrown around you that protection by which you have been shielded in the hour of battle and that whether you stand or fall the day of final victory to our country is not afar off. On my return to the city on saturday night we had the second report of the fall of Petersburg but this morning we again learn that the report is premature but the hope and belief on every side arestrong that not only that city, but Richmond the strong hold of the rebellion will soon be in the firm grasp of General Grant & Butler................
Theletter is in good condition with some wear, there are tears one is around a couple inches.
