1861-1862-1863

A fine early vintageand genuine.

Three regular size complete newspapers., The New York Herald, dated May 15, 1861 [ with a postal mark from Godfreys' Union Square Post Office ] ~~This is an unlisted Local. [ I find this post mentioned in the 1850 Directory, and the name of its proprietor given as P. C. Godfrey. It subsequently passed into the control of J. E. Dunham, and was, I believe, continued until about 1866. ]

News of a possible Negro insurrection brewing, descriptions of curious Negro funerals. Large article on the 7th Steuben Volunteers leaving the city [ New York ] The 1st and the 9th leaving soon, The Astor Regiment., news that Col. Elmer Ellsworth has been assassinated [ small article being this news has just arrived ]. Map of the Seat of War around Washington, DC., ..Fugitive slaves have arrived in Washington., They are calling Col. Ellsworth "The Martyr of Alexandria ".

The April 14, 1863 issue is a thick newspaper with 12 pages., with a huge detailed map showing the "Great Iron-Clad Fight"., operations off Charleston., Fort Sumter and the CSA forts protecting the approaches, the great iron-clad gunboats passing through the narrows and blasting away at the forts.

The Feb. 23, 1862 has full details from Gen. Grant on the battle of Fort Donelson., an eyewitness to the horrors are told in vivid details, bodies as deep as six foot high, details of the cannon fire blowing away those in front into pieces, etc., terrible details of battle.

Three excellent historic newspapers., no odors., very faint indication of moisture stains, faint, not bad.
