Civil War Pass -- March 13, 1864 -- Headquarters Military District Of Washington:
$48

This original Civil War pass was issued March 13th 1864 by Headquarters Military District of Washington. It passes "Surg. G. K. Smith and two friends 'Mounted' to Con. Camp and return for the purpose of Business""This Pass will expire March 13th 1864""By order of John H. Martindale, Brig. Gen. and Military Governor."I cannot decipher the signature at the bottom. It is someone who is a Captain and Aide-de-Camp.Handwritten, vertically across the left end of the pass, it says, "Issued by Chas. W. Thompson, Lieut & Officer of the Day"In the upper left corner it says, "No. 225"The document measures approximately 5 1/4 by 7 inches and is on a form printed by Philp & Solomons, Army Stationers, Washington. This 149 year old document has some tearing and water damage on the lower left edge. It shows normal aging and discoloration and evidence of having been folded both vertically and horizontally. Two small rectangular marks are visible on the top edge of the back side, consistent with the pass having been mounted in an album at some point. All in all, this historic document has a nice appearance, in spite of the imperfections. It would be a good addition to your collection.Take a close look at all of the pictures; and, if you like what you see, place a offer.I ship via USPS Priority Mail; and, I pay half the cost.
