Civil War Passport 1861 Signed By William H Seward For SalePassport Signed by William H Seward as Secretary of State, issued to George A Meyer, August 21, 1861, just after the beginning of the Civil War. Passport is mounted on linen (for durability) and bound into a small booklet, done at the time of issue; reverse of passport contains one consular stamp from Bremen (Germany), the booklet also contains one consular stamp from the US consulate at Bremen good for travel in Europe plus another consular stamp from Berlin. Seward signs at the bottom of the passport. Passport measures 10 X 15 inches and has been cut down to fit into the booklet at the time it was made. William H Seward was Secretary of State during both the Lincoln and Johnson administrations, he was one of Lincoln’s must trusted advisors and was responsible for the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
