This original and unused civil war patriotic cover comes from the great 19th C collection of T. Harrison Garrett, via the estate of the family of his librarian and art curator.

1861 Civil War patriotic cover with Flag and states, "The Stars and Stripes must cover the whole" printed on the flap side of the envelope. "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1861, by William Perris, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York."

Precursors to picture postcards,"bumper stickers of the civil war," patriotic envelopes provide avivid glimpse into the passionate emotions that raged between the mid 1850s, and 1865. Despite the brief period of their production, there is an immense variety of images and slogans--some 6,000-10,000 different designs.
