Civil War Postal Cover Free Franked By Penn. Congressman Campbell. For Sale
A war-date Union postal cover addressed to: "Miss. Annie E. Robinson, Rock Island, Illinois." measuring approximately 4 5/8" x 2 3/4". Free Franked by Pennsylvania congressman JAMES H. CAMPBELL (1820-1895) who also served as a major in the 25th Penn. Vols., and as Minister to Sweden in 1864. Postmarked at Washington, D. C. in May 1861.
Opened at the left with several expected creases and tears. From the Civil War archive of Lt. Ira Gensel 4th United States Infantry who was mortally wounded in action during the battle of Fredericksburg, Va. on Dec. 13, 1862.
