Civil War Reporter Norcross: President Johnson A Traitor, Should Be Hanged:
blood of Union men, fresh from the Massacres of Memphis and New Orleans, the demons of Salisbury and Andersonville, and committing to them the destinies of the country. All the indications point to that, and should he do so there will be such a war in this country, that the one we have just passed through will be as child’s play compared with it. Into that war, I must go. I must in some way deliver another blow at the enemies of the government and the people. None but loyal men shall rule this country and I am determined to be one of them. I may have to wait some time, but in the way that is to come I will have the opportunity to mount a step higher. The loyal masses are ready for such a war there are nearly a million trained soldiers who will rally at the call of the radical leaders, and we will sweep Johnson out of existence and hang him to the highest tree we can find within convenient distance. I am too much of a soldier to stand idle at such a time, living luxuriously in the cities, I must be in the field, and there I will be. Johnson threatens to disperse Congress by the military power. Let him try and do it. The foul mouth drunken blackguard will find that he has taken upon himself a task which he cannot finish, but which will finish him. He will be hurled from his place of power and cast into the gutter, where he will never rise again except to his doom.
