A Civil War soldier's letter from Sylvester Rounds of the 17th Connecticut Volunteers ..... To his Sister Martha. March 9th, 1864 ....." old Killpatrick ( General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick ) has been on another raid, but I guess he has not succeeded anything but destroying the railroads, but that will hurt them some "" I believe the Rebs are fixing to evacuate Richmond "" they are getting a large force in North Carolina and will attack Gen. Peck at New..... and if they succeed in driving Union out of New.... they will evacuate Richmond and locate their Capitol at Raleigh, the Capitol of N.C. "" they are getting so drove to the wall that they cannot defend their whole line "" so they have got to shorten it to enable them to hold any of their Country "" I begin to believe that this summer will end this Rebellion "" it will take some pretty hard fighting to do it "" I am going to another meeting, but not church, perhaps Father knows what kind it is "" it is called the Union league of America, it is a secret ....... So I will not say anything about it, only none but good Union men are allowed to join, they have such ones in Birmingham and in every city in the United States "" I haven't heard anything from the Regt since I wrote you before "" we had another fire Monday night, a Livery Stable burned up, 7 horses were burned with it, some of them were very nice ones, worth $500 "" last night I was at Church, at a church in the city called the Franklin Street Church " " He was wounded at Gettysburg July 1st 1863 and transferred to the 136th Company 2nd Battalion V.R.C.
