A Civil War soldier's letter from Sylvester Rounds of the 17th Connecticut Volunteers ..... To his Sister Martha May 22nd, 1865 ....." I suppose they will have a big time in Washington tomorrow and Wednesday at the Grand Review "" it will please some but I don't believe the soldiers will like it much "" for now that they have got through their fighting, it would seem natural for them to wish to get to their homes as soon as possible "" and not have to be Paraded around for other people's amusement "" I should think that for the last four years the people had chances enough to see soldiers "" I suppose though they want to give them a farewell "" work is getting pretty plenty on account of soldiers coming home for Muster out of the service "" they are coming pretty fast now, there will probably be some three or four thousand here by next Saturday "" now I wish I did not belong to the Veteran Reserve Corps, then I would stand some chance of getting out of the service " " I suppose there are some Connecticut troops coming home, but I don't believe the 17th has started yet "" it will probably be soon, for there is an order from the War Department ordering the muster out of service of all troops whose term of service expires previous to October 1st, 1865 "" it also says this is not to include the Veteran Reserve Corps "" Old Jeff ( Davis ) is at Fortress Monroe " He was wounded at Gettysburg July 1st 1863 and transferred to the 136th Company 2nd Battalion V.R.C.
