This incredible piece of Civil Warhistory was found in my father’s basement.The certificate measures about 15-3/4 inches long and 11-3/4 incheswide. It is a paper document and isquite fragile. It has creases where it wasfolded in quarters; there are also wrinkles throughout. There are tears, especially along the leftedge, but no pieces of the document are missing. The certificate is hand-dated Dec. 6th,1863. It reads:

“The Union Defenders Certificate inSupport & Defense of the Government, the Union and the Constitution of theUnited States, Against the Great Rebellion.”

The hand-written and signed part of thecertificate reads:

“This Certifies That Charles Arnold hasserved as a Volunteer in Comp C 4th Regt Wis. Vol 1 yr 6 mo”

“Colonel H. E. Paine commanding regt.”

“Battles Batton . . .”

I cannot read a few of the words. The certificate was published by McMullen& Gates, 143 Walnut St. Cincinnati, O.

This document was found in a plasticframe with cardboard taped to the back.I removed the cardboard to get better photos. The certificate will ship in the plasticframe with cardboard, but it needs archival protection to preserve it. Please ask questions if you have them – Ihave little knowledge of Civil War documents and archival processes for antiquepaper. I do know this is a remarkablepiece of history and needs to be attended to by an appreciative caretaker.
