Civil War Wallet, Tri Fold, Strap Retainer, Six Compartment, Inscribed Riley Taf:
CIVIL WAR ERA WALLET MUSEUM QUALITY, TRI FOLD WITH SIX COMPARTMENTS FOR BILLS. INSCRIBED "RILEY TAFT RICHMOND VIRGINIA, BELOW TAFT, SECOND NAME C. P. BENNETT. I found a second wallet identical to this one in Savannah Georgia in the Webb Military Museum on display there. This is one of the most ingenious designs ever seen for ease of use and versatility and good looks. The leather is very thin, well stitched, closed with an in tact leather strap and is in very good condition. Front and back is lightly embossed with a thin line crossed symbol from corner to corner. When opened the left side compartment also is closed with a short strap. I did not research the names TAFT or BENNETT and do not know their historical significance. The new owner may do this research at his or her convenience. I am sure wallets as these are rare especially in this fine condition with inscribed owners names. I do not know the significiance of two names inscribed inside unless the persons held a joint account with a partner or relative. Please note the photo's for clarity in details, email questions prior to offerding, the only defects noted are one corner with frayed stitching and a small round ink spot the size of a pencil eraser. The inscribed names are now light and hard to read but can be seen by the pen impressions. Thanks for looking.
