OriginalCivil Wardischarge certificateissued to Private Jacob R. Hutchinson, whoserved in the 1st New Hampshire Infantryfrom April 27-August 9, 1861 whenthe regiment wasmustered out at Concord. He was born in Sunapee, New Hampshire,was 25 years old and a tanner by occupation. After being discharged, he re-enlisted in the 9thNew Hampshire Infantry and served the remainder of the war. This discharge is signed bythe company commander and also by Major Seth Eastman of the 5th US Infantry as mustering officer. Prior to the Civil War, Eastman was a noted artist of Indians for the War Department and was prolific at Fort Snelling, which he commanded. Hundreds of his illustrations appeared in Henry Schoolcraft's 6 volume Indian Tribes of the United States, printed from 1851-1857. He retired from the Army in 1863, but continued his artistic work for the government. Document size about7" x 9 1/2", with a few fold separations, etc. as normal for discharges. No paper loss.
