Civil War Rare Hotchkiss Artillery Cannon Shell:
police- this is a solid cast iron shell and does not contain powder or a powder cavity. It is a solid made relic historical Civil War collectable. Please do not pull sale !!!!!!! Here is an extremely rare Hotchkiss projectile. Andrew Hotchkiss patented these in 1861 for use in a rare rifled boat howitizer of 3.4 caliber. This bolt measures about 3.31 inches in diameter. It is a solid cast iron bolt intended to do damage to other ships and fortifications. It is very rare because the navy used these and I gather most were shot over the water and lost at sea. hence, you don't see them very often and they don't turn up on the collectors market, and are even less frequently offered for sale. One neat thing is the flat base on this shell, most Hotchkiss are rounded. This shell is in excellent condition, it looks like whomever coated it put a thick preservative coating on it. But it is stable and ready for the advanced Hotchkiss collector !! It displays beautifully !! Try to find another...... thanks for lookin'
