A nice Civil War era sword. The wire wrap and covering are really nice. The blade has some spotting and wear but still pretty good. The hand guard is marked US and the blade is marked E. Pluribus Unum. The blade has 2 small marks on it at the base. 1 looks to be a crown over an R. The other is like a shield with a S in it. Probably an import. The overall length is approx. 36-1/2". Please see my other Civil War era items for collectors and reenactors now and more to come. U.S. sales only, no returns. Thanks, On Feb-18-13 at 13:57:15 PST, seller added the following information:
A friend suggested that I point something out about the sword. The sword is nice but the hand guard has some play in it. It looks like it needs to be tightened at the end of the guard where it meets the pommel (?) or end cap. I am not a sword expert so I don't know if this is normal for old swords or if they can be easily tightened. Sorry if that caused any trouble but wanted to point it out. Thanks,

I added a picture (#12) that shows a space where the hand guard attaches to the pommel(or end cap) where it needs to be tightened up. There is a gap there where you can see it could be tightened up closer to the grip. Hope that helps. Thanks,
