Description Large Collection of World War II letters between PfC then Cpl Edwin B Lasher and his Wife

There are 156 letters from Lasher to his wife dated fromJanuary 16, 1944 to August 8, 1945.Lasher wrote letters from Sicily until February 20, when he landed inItaly. When he arrived in Italy eitherhe or his wife began numbering his letters in pencil. There 102 numbered letters; virtually all thenumbered letters are here plus some that are not numbered. About half of the letters are handwritten andhalf are typed. In all, there are about400 pages. Lasher was a member of the 7thMotion Picture Unit (16mm) apparently as a technician. His unit appears to have gotten preferentialtreatment in the choice of places to stay and to set up their laboratories,which were safely in Allied hands. Ibelieve virtually all of his letters are here as most begin where the last leftoff. Also he is very literate so hedescribes events well even though he is extremely aware of the censor – one ofhis first letters from Sicily is cut to shreds.Because he wrote almost a letter a day, his letters give a GI’scontinuous impressions of Italy just after the Allies defeated the retreatingGermans and then after V-E Day when the reconstruction began. He sometimes talks of his assignments butreminds himself of the censor, thereby keeping these observations brief. Many of the letters tell stories ofinteracting with the Italian populace in a war torn country, especially women thathe did not find attractive and food that was not very good. With the letters to his wife is a singlesnapshot of his unit in front of St. Peter’s at the Vatican and a few lettersto his parents. There is also oneenvelope.

There are 106 letters from Lasher’s wife Jeanie to himdated from January 18 to August 2, 1945.All but the last few letters are numbered consecutively beginning withthe number 1. For whatever reason,someone changed the numbering system in the middle of the letters. The first 75 letters are numbered 1 to75. Beginning with letter 43, theletters are also numbered from number 1 (i.e., letter 43 is also numbered 1, 44is also 2, and so on). After letter 75,the first number was dropped and only the second number was used until theyreached 55. About half of the lettersare handwritten and half are typed.Jeanie lived in Los Angeles, California and related what is happening toher in detail. Because all of herletters are present, it is easy to see exactly what she was doing for the 8month period when her husband was overseas.If you want to know the details of the life of a woman married to asoldier, she provides it.

It is very difficult in a short space to give a trueflavor of these letters. Both writersare extremely expressive and the letters are both easy and fun to read. I was mesmerized when I first got them andread them all in about two days. Theyare as good as a book account of a soldier and his wife in World War II andtheir desires to be together again.
