Collection Of Over 450 Original Nathan Martin Baker Handwritten Sermons, Some Cw For Sale
PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS BELOW.
I have listed this week many historical items from the family of the Reverend Nathan Martin Baker (1837-1922). Rev. Baker was a Cumberland Presbyterian minsiter in the Decatur, Illinois area. He was also chaplain of the 116th Illinois Regiment during the Civil War, seeing action in the western theater (Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge and elsewhere). Rev. Baker was the son of William Davis Baker and Marilla Martin Baker.
This sale features a Collection of Over (450) ORIGINAL Nathan Martin Baker Handwritten Sermons, Eulogies and Other Religious Writings. At least (19) were written during or just prior to the Civil War and deal with the war and/or slavery. Some of the (19) were preached by Rev. Baker in the field while chaplain of the 116th Illinois regiment. I did not methodically read every sermon or count every page. In my estimation there are well over 2,000 pages among the roughly 475 sermons/writings. Also, I expect there are many more than the (19) that touch on the slavery question and/or division within the country leading up to the war. The sermons/writings date from the 1850's to the 1890's (possibly a few into the early 1900's). I am estimating that nearly half date from the 1850's and 1860's. A good number are signed by Rev. Baker. NOTE: I HAVE INCLUDED PHOTOS OF SOME OF THE BETTER EXAMPLES BELOW. PLEASE GIVE THE PHOTOS TIME TO LOAD AS THERE ARE (75) OF THEM.
