This original first edition is 142 years old!
This 136 year old New York state travel guide describes its
show
places
along the legendary Hudson River ending at Niagara Falls. Included are
funny and pathetic stories of the present and past. The book not
only describes the fascinating and historical sites in 1871 of New York
state, but gives some background and facts about events that took place
on or near the sites described such as the duel between Philip Hamilton
and George J Eacker in 1801 at the Weehawken Dueling Ground (on the
same ground that Alexander Hamilton fell in 1804 in his duel with Aaron
Burr, and the very spot where his eldest son had been killed);
Carmansville, a suburb of New York that Audubon (the American
ornithologist) lived; how Aaron Burr's second wife owned a necklace of
garnets found near the New York Institute for the Deaf and Dumb; the
legend of the Dutch goblin of Thunder Mountain; an incident on a stage
coach ride to the Mountain House in the Catskill Mountains; description
of the 'new' State House and Capitol along with several other
government buildings; description of digging up the remains of Lord
George Howe and found his hair had grown several inches; and many, many
more tidbits of fascinating legends, lore and history buried in this
descriptive guide to the state of New York.......... a
fascinating book!! Colt's Guide records facts about the towns and
settlements, counties, rivers, lakes, creeks and other watercourses of
New York as they existed in 1871.
