A SCARCE JOHN BELL HOOD AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED

JOHN BELL HOOD (1831-1879).  Hood, a Confederate general, was known for his bold and aggressive actions.  He was severely wounded at Gettysburg and Chickamauga, and ordered a massive frontal assault at the Battle of Franklin.

ALS. 1pg. 8” x 10”. December 27, 1871. New Orleans.  A scarce autograph letter signed “J.B. Hood” as President of the Louisiana and Texas Department of the Life Association of America.  The former general wrote to the Honorable William Barnes, who was the superintendent of the insurance department of the State of New York.  He handwrote: “I have your esteemed favor of the 15th inst. and pleased to have you again in St. Louis.  I trust the Bogher affair will prove a benefit rather than an injury to the Ass. and that this will clear all breakers to a …the Sea.  I feel & have ever felt great faith in our final success – and such a success as all will feel great pride – You, my dear Sir, I regard as one of our main Pilots and to you I look for safe guidance.  Col. Cumming has I think I remember, and will give the matter proper attention.  My happy circle all well and desire kind remembrances to you & Mrs. Barnes.  Yours Sincerely J.B. Hood”.  The letter has sharp folds with on small separation at a fold intersection; the writing is dark and bold.
