MAGNIFICENT AMERICAN INDIAN BEADED VEST
Dating to the late 19th, early 20th century; this heavily beaded vest is a joy to behold, having a wonderful design and composition, the beadwork is likely that of the Crow, possibly Northern Cheyenne or Blackfoot. The vest originally came out of a private collection in Montana and was acquired in the early 1900s.Several knowledgeable collectors do feel that it is Crow beadwork but due to the complex and very specific design, it could also be Cheyenne, Blackfoot or even Nez Perce. The symbology in the design is very interesting insofar as it\'s American Flags, Christian Crosses and MOST interestingly, the fleur de lis of The Boy Scouts Of America prominent on both left and right sides.Perhaps even more interesting are the ties; old leather thongs to which are attached the typical elk teeth of the plains tribes but MOST INTERESTINGLY they include elements of Northwest Coast Indian or Aleut culture; bone carvings with the typical Aleut dot in circle design and what appear to be bone carved simulated (maybe real) shark teeth capped with copper - again, very typical of Northwest cultures. Really an enigma; Plains Indian/ NW Coast trading or maybe the whole thing could be Canadian, Athabaskan, Cree, who knows, you tell me!The age, quality of beadwork and obvious expense suggests the vest was commissioned by someone of importance in the BSA organization - perhaps one of the founders? Possibly an award or gift?Further research could greatly enhance the value of this beautiful vest.A large man\'s size; I\'m 6 foot and 200 pounds - it fits me comfortably and due to the large amount of beadwork, I think this beauty weighs a good 5 pounds.Very minor bead loss, I\'d estimate 1% or less of total, quite stable - excellent, supple hide.
