Many Confederate knives were made by local Southern blacksmiths to meet the demand for edged weapons during the Civil War. The D guard was one of the prominent styles of knives that were carried by southern soldiers during the war. This knife is a forged 1095 tool steel version of those style of knives. The blade has been antiqued anddeferentiallyheat treated* for real use. The sheath is wood and leather with a Japanned finish that is historically correct on southern blades. Historically accurate construction and theblade goes all the way through the handle and is fastened on the pommel.
*Differential hardening is a method used in knife making to increase the hardness of the edge without making the whole blade brittle. To achieve this the edge is cooled more rapidly than the spine. The result is a tighter molecular structure in the cutting edge than in the spine of the blade.
