This is a RARE and EXTRAORDINARY sterling silver and amethyst bracelet that was hand wrought in Taxco, before 1948, by master silver artist, DOMINGUEZ. This piece is signed JMDguez ~ Bille Hougart indicates in his hallmark book that this is probably DOMINGUEZ (see hallmark paragraph). This magnificent bracelet is masterfully crafted in a feminine and artistic motif that has a wonderful art nouveau look. The bracelet is made of 980 silver which is almost PURE silver and is superior to sterling silver 925. It consists of sterling silver links in two designs ~ one has luscious dark purple amethyst cabochons that are bezel set in silver and surrounded with an ornate framework of silver scrollwork. The other has silver repousse demi spheres that are surrounded with an ornate framework of silver scrollwork. Repoussage is a metal working technique in which malleable metals (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the reverse or underside. This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or several days to complete just one piece! The links are connected with soldered silver jump rings. The clasp is a simple hook closure that is seen on much of the early Mexican jewelry ~ a previous owner has added a safety chain that is removable on one side (could be removed altogether if new owner wishes as the hook closure is tight and secure). This spectacular bracelet is extremely well made in an elegant and sophisticated motif that will always be in vogue ~ an early art-to-wear bracelet that is sure to be noticed and admired ~ a grand asset to any vintage Taxco silver collection! SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 7-1/8", width is 7/8", and weight is 27.5 grams.
CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, cracks, or damage to amethyst cabochons only naturally occuring inclusions and color variances that are inherent to Mexican amethysts ~ minor scratches due to loving wear and age ~ just about PERFECT used condition!
HALLMARKS: On the hook portion of the clasp: "TAXCO, 980, JMDguez". Artist "JMDguez" is shown on page 232 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that "JMDguez" is probably DOMINGUEZ, who is shown on page 58.
