1770’s American Gentleman’s Embroidered 3 Pc Wedding Ensemble from Major Museum: I purchased this three piece man's suit from the
second sale of the Brooklyn Museum of arts collection. Inside the
linen lining of the waist band there is written in ink. No. 5 pants XVIII
Century. This wedding suit is from the 1770's. This is a once in a
life time opportunity to own a very important piece of American History. The
coat is made of a champagne colored silk faille. The long coat is trimmed
in hand woven metallic lace trim and has large polished steel buttons. All
of the buttons are present. The coat
does have some staining but is in sound condition. It has one small hole
on theleft shoulders and some age related wear. It is lined in silk
and linen. There is some deterioration of the silk lining at the front
opening. See photos. The chest is 40, the length from neck to hem
in back is 40, the arms are 27 and the shoulders are 14. The embroidered waist
coat is completely hand embroidered in a multi colored floral motif. It
is lined in a combination of linen and a softer fabric that appears to be some
kind of flannel. The lining is in good condition with age related
staining. There is some wear to the outer part of the vest and some age
related wear to the silk embroidery. See photos. All of the embroidered
buttons are present, although one no longer has its inside steel disk.
The chest is 38, the waist is 35.5 The
vest front is made of heavy silk satin. The britches are made of champagne silk
faille. They are heavily stained but still display well as you can
see. I have them pinned to the form. There is a 3 to four inch
split at one of the side seams of the pant legs. this could be repaired
or reinforced. There are 2 buttons missing. One on the waist band and one on the front flap. The waist is 38 and the length from waist
to hem of pants is 33. The offerding will start at .99. The reserve
will protect the amount I paid at sale which was quite reasonable for this
extremely rare piece of American History.
