Dan Mask, Liberia, African Tribal Creations Art Feminine Deangle Fire Racer Wood:
AnAfrican Tribal CreationsDan Mask
Dan masks are considered a real treasure in African art, both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the 'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. The energy and existence of these spirits is said to exist deep in the forest where the trees grow tall and dense. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes.
Most likely intended for use as a 'racer mask' (part of a men's training game intended to teach hunting and fighting skills), this mid-sized mask displays the ubiquitous rounded eyes with embossed perimeters common to many Dan masks. It has a ridged, slightly protruding forehead, often associated with femininity (especially in the Deangle) and two patterned 'brows', which are most likely representative of scarifications. The patina is a dark blackish-brown and is somewhat unevenly worn smooth. The condition of the mask is very good, though it displays normal signs of age and exposure on the interior and exterior surfaces. It does not appear to have undergone any serious or noteworthy damage, and the details are excellently carved. Please see the photos for additional details, and never be afraid to ask questions! This is a truly excellent, and beautiful example of the style.
