From Bellona Island, 10km long and 2.5 km widein the Solomon Islands one magnificent dance club. This club is 98 cm long and has a width of about 5 or 6 cm. The club has a beautifulpearl shell inlaid handle and has been carvedwith crocodile, snakeand fish motifs.The bottom tip is protected by asmall copper ring. Island is an island of the Rennell and Bellona Province, Solomon Islands. Its length is about 10km and its average
width 2.5km. Its area is about 17km². It is almost totally
surrounded by 30–70 m high cliffs, consisting primarily of raised coral limestone.
At Rennell (Munggava) and Bellona (Mungiki), two islands administered by
Solomon Islands, dance and music were banned by the missionaries, but revived
during World War II. Suahongi (meaning a “circle”, or to “hover about”),
is an important dance form in the Bellonese tradition. It is a ritual dance
which lasts for about half an hour, has three parts, and is performed by men.
The first part, called the buatanga, is performed in circles while the
other two parts are done in lines.
