Daniel Low Salem Witch Second Pattern Sterling Souvenir Spoon Gorham Demitasse :
This beautiful spoon is among the earliest known souvenir spoons in America. It features the witch in moon handle tip and cat handle base. Reads “SALEM 1692” on the handle. The reverse has a period monogram “M” at the tip, and the bowl reverse is marked STERLING DANIEL LOW with the Gorham makers mark. Measures about 4 1/8” in length and weighs 14 grams. This spoon has been cleaned with a rouge cloth to check for possible damage, when I acquired it the bowl did not look perfect. There is a patch of mild cloudiness in the bowl after polishing but no corrosive damage, this sometimes occurs from a bad acid test or long term contact with a corrosive agent such as salt. I have removed marks such as this with heavy polishing but would not do so with this historic piece. It is difficult to notice without the right kind of lighting and the rest of the spoon is in excellent condition with very little wear. Thank you for the questions and comments. I normally would not clean a spoon but I felt I could not accurately describe it without doing so. Sitting by my computer with normal room lighting I do not see any cloudiness in the bowl, only a mirror finish. If I were to put it in direct light I can detect a very slight change in finish for about 1/4 of the bowl, this will dull over time. Other than that there is very little in the way of scratching or wear. I don't think you will be disappointed with the quality of this rare spoon.
