Daniel O'connell Irish Political Patriot Leader Life Insurance Policy 1820 For Sale
Life Insurance Policy Taken Out By D. O'Connell At London Union
Assurance, 30th October 1820.
Amounting to the sum of £3,250. Printed
one side. Approx. 13" x 8". In this old document we have a most unusual part of history. Something as mundane in Daniel O'Connell's life as his life insurance policy now holds fascination to us. Made in 1820, O'Connell was insured for £3,250.00 or about £139,250.00 today. Says a lot about how much he thought his life was worth and how, if he'd only known the impact he would have on Ireland, he might have insured himself for a bit more. He lists his name, date of birth, born at Carhen, near Cahirciveen in Co. Kerry. He claims never to have been in the army or navy, which would obviously be a more hazardous occupation. Thankfully he never suffered from Small Pox or Chicken Pox or gout. May seem like strange things to us today but these conditions were prevalent and dangerous at that time. You will also notice the name of O'Connell's uncle, Maurice 'Hunting Gun' O'Connell who sponsored young Daniel as he studied in France and later as he was admitted as a barrister in King's Inns in Dublin.A rare legacy of "The Liberator"!
Accompanied by Letter of Authenticity.
