Listing the names of 17 boys and three girls of the Bakwena people captured by the Boers to serve as domestic slaves. Written on two sides of one piece of paper measuring at 8\" x 5\", folded, one fold strengthened with archival tape, in good condition. Litubaruba (Bechuanaland), 12 January 1853. DavidLivingstone(1813-1873) the famous Scottish missionary andtraveler, lists the names of the slave children and writesbeneath, \'The above names of boys and girls captured by the Boers from the Bakwens alone were taken from the parents & friends reports to me on the 12th January 1853 at Litubaruba. David Livingston\'. This list was probably sent to Robert Moffat, Livingstone\'s father-in-law, with a covering letter. Some of the children were taken in and cared for by the Moffats. Livingstone left the Bakwena on January 15 1853. The Moffats had served as missionaries among the Bechuana tribes since the 1840\'s. They nursed Livingstone at Kuruman after anaccidentand in May 1844 Livingstone married their eldest daughter, Mary. Livingstone\'s letter to his wife Mary, dated 14 January 1853 (published in Schapera, David Livingstone Family Letters, Vol. 2), describes the effects of the Boer attacks on the Makwains, and mentions the list of 123 captured natives recorded in his notebook (Many mothers have lost all their children, and many mothers haven to yet escape from the Boers) It is possiblethatthis memorandum of 12 January was part of the process of gathering evidence against the Boers, and conveying the details to the Moffats.Autograph - 8
