David Roberts Egypt Large 1st Edition Print Of Memnonium Thebes Rare Stunning.:
Here we have a beautiful print from the book by the artist David Roberts, Egypt and the Holy Land. Roberts born in Edinburgh in 1796 worked on a series of over 200 oil paintings and many watercolours which were in time turned into some of the most famous and valuable books of the 19th century.
He famously travelled to the sites and worked up some brilliant scetches and watercolours which upon returning to England were made into Oil Paintings and exhibited in London. At the time his work caused a sensation and led to various publications featuring the work of the artist. Still one of the most sort after works of the 19th century.
This page is from Egypt and the Holy Land Entitled "Fragment of the Great Colossus at the Memnonium, Thebes" This fragement of the Temple of circular columns, with capitals of the budding lotus, is a beautiful and picturesque object. The fragment of a statue of Ramaese II is, however the great wonder of the momnonium. It was formed of one stupendous mass of syenite or granite and represented the king seated on a throne, with his hands resting on his kness, it has now been overthrown, and the colossal fragments lie scattered round the pedestal. When complete it weighed over 900 tons and was thrown down by an earthquake in the 80s BCE. This statue and this area put the poets Shelley's pen to paper to write "Ozymandius" one of his most famous poems.
In typical David Roberts style the figures are well modelled and natural but overshadowed by the huge architectural features in the foreground and background. Often people sit or group around columns which have fallen in his works as we see here. The page is charmingly finished in white highlights. You can also see the printers name F.G Moon Threadneedle St and the date March 1st 1847 which is the exact date the print was manufactured.
