JOSIAH BARTLETT (1729 – 1795) was a prominent physician and BOTH a founder of and FIRST President of the New Hampshire Medical Society. He was New Hampshire's ONLY delegate to the Continental Congress of 1775 and part of 1776, serving on every major committee. Bartlett was the second person to sign his name to the Declaration of Independence, after that of John Hancock. He was later Chief Justice and Governor of the state of New Hampshire.
COLONEL EBENEZER STEVENS was a British loyalist and sympathizer. Interestingly enough, the town of Salisbury, New Hampshire was named after him for a time. The town was first granted in 1736 by the Massachusetts government and was named Baker's Town, in honor of Captain Thomas Baker, a famous Indian scout. In 1749, the town was renamed Stevens-town, after Colonel Ebenezer Stevens of Kingston. It was incorporated by the New Hampshire government in 1768 as Salisbury. CONDITION: document measures about 2 ¾ x 7 3/8 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT overall condition with dark writing and a bold signature. There is some minor creasing and a very small archival (linen cloth) tape reinforcement (about ¾’s of an inch in length) on the backside of the document along the top (see scans). Josiah Bartlett’s signature / autograph is guaranteed authentic. Winning buyer to pay $12 for shipping, postage & INSURANCE. Please email your questions.
