Detective Comics #1 1937 Vintage Cover Print Rare Printed 1967- 1977 Ellsworth:
This classic cover for Detective Comics number 1, the Flagship and namesake title for DC Comics was attributed to Whitney Ellsworth. It predates Action Comics 1 and is therefore on the cusp of the platinum and golden age of comics. Detective was not a mere re packaging of newspaper strips though, so it is clearly one of the first true comic books. It debuted Siegel and Shuster's muscular square jawed Slam Bradley, the masked (and later costumed) hero the Crimson Avenger, and by Detective #27 two years into its run, Batman. The rest is our reality.

What it is:
A vintage cover plate of a recognized classic golden age comic officially licenced by the copyright holder decades ago, prized by collectors, connoisseurs and historians. This classic cover for Detective Comics n number 1, the Flagship and namesake title for DC Comics was attributed to Whitney Ellsworth.
It is Vintage as in over 40 years old, but not 80. Artist and details above.
It is a single plate, in VF or better condition, not the full series.
It was printed between 1967 and 1977 as a part of a series of golden age covers. (The earliest copyright dates are 1940s and the latest renewals are 1969, copyright information on the Fawcett comics reflects these are from the era that Fawcett and DC shared administration of the Captain Marvel/Shazam characters, suggesting 1970s.)
There are no blunt corners or color breaks. Some are pristine, and others have the slightest handling wear.
It is suitable for framing and provides enough white space to give you options for matting or not.
What it is not:
Not an original comic cover from the 1940s.
Not a full comic book or comic reprint.
Not a photocopy or homemade modern print. This was photographed in the pre-digital era and printed using heavy poster/ art print standards.
Not a replica cover for wrapping around your coverless comics.
Not the full series of 40 plates. The photos of multiple plates and index are there for reference only (I will send a copy of the index as well. I am not selling the full set but listing the plates separately and keeping a few).
Not matted or framed. I will leave that to you and your personal taste.
This poster is VF by comic standards, and the paper is of higher quality and better archival grade than golden age covers. It comes from a 1977 portfolio and lies flat, and is glossy but it is still apparent that this was not printed yesterday. There are no color breaks or obvious flaws, any visible flaws are from the original comic photographed. It is about 9 by 12, with the comic centered and close to original golden age cover size. In most cases, the identifying information/ copy on the back is for the next comic in the plate series, and not the one pictured on the front.
These prints have laid flat for over 40 years, so I don't really want to roll them, but if that is your preference, please specify that when you pay, and allow for a couple more days in shipping. Otherwise, they are sent flat, in a magazine bag and board, with the same standard of care as the rare golden age comics I collect and occasionally sell.
All prints have a low starting offer and reasonable Buy it Now while it lasts.
I send single items priority mail for $8.00. Unlimited shipping on cover prints for the same price. The speed and safety of priority is worth it. I combine shipping wherever possible, and ship for free for orders over $100.
