This is a great 1820s diary of an itinerant pastor who traveled around New York state preaching. He details his travels as well as his interactions and sermons. There is much more as it is over 200 pages handwritten and is completely full. It has great content throughout. Here is a small sample of what is in the diary: In the afternoon of the Sabbath baptized a child of Moses Freeman a colored man named Huldah Mariah…Rode to Denmark from there to Mr Snell’s who has thought of uniting with the church Returned to Copenhagen visited in the dutch settlement.Found deplorable ignorance and whole families destitute of the Bible… After lecture, the church session according to the laws for their government, proceeded to examine Alexander Van Brocklin and Jacob Syver for admission into the church and voted to receive them… Went to Denmark with wagon returned got my horse shod visited Mr Young a confirmed Universalist who is dangerously ill… After sermon baptized Jane Eleanor, Rachel, Josiah and Malachi Vandusen children of Mr Henry Plank and Margaret his wife, bot of them members of the church.Also baptized Abner, child of Mr Nathan Townsen and Margaret his wife…Ezra young departed this life aged 27 years in health he was a confirmed Universalists and his habits conformed to his sentiments.At the commencement of his sickness which was bleeding at the lungs, he manifested great stupidity respecting his soul and much hardness towards Christians.At length he appeared to think more seriously renounced his sentiments, became distressed on account of his sins and as we hope at length found the Saviour precious to his soul.Afterwards he appeared calm in view of death and expressed a hope that he was going to glory.His former associates manifested great displeasure on account of his renouncing his sentiments… Edmund was more dangerously ill and before sunset he expired.His disorder was called the malignant sore throat… The Christians had made an appointment for the evening in the schoolhouse manifestly for the purpose of molesting us, I made an appointment as usual not knowing what had been done.We all met at the same hour.Finding that they had taken much pains to excite a commotion I judged it best to disappoint them by yield of my appointment and giving their ranting preacher opportunity to say what he had to say…Drunkards, liars, Sabbath breakers and profane swearers all rally around the new preacher… Visited a number of times a sick woman by the name of Peabody, found her very low and stupid, yet manifesting some anxiety respecting her everlasting welfare… Set out for Lorraine, arrived at 3 next morning having rode all night in consequence of a malicious report of my wife’s illness which had been put in circulation… At Remson preached twice and attended conference, an interesting interview with some of the principal inhabitants who appear anxious about their souls, spent the week at Remson and Russia Attended the funeral of Louisa Polly a young woman of 20.She died of a consumption… During the PM sermon a young man by the name of Robert Stancliff who made disturbance in the morning service came into the house with a number of associates and immediately began to whisper and laugh.I called him by name and publicly rebuked him, his wrath was such that he gnashed at me with his teeth… Wednesday set out for the North called at Boonville and agreed on exchange with Mr Manly rode to Leyden spent the night with Mr Kimball… Attended the Russia Monthly Church Conference at this meeting the church formed themselves into a Missionary society…A Happy night to the family in consequence of the return of their son Charles from school… Saturday attended the funeral of Mr Phillio and elderly man who died in a fit of intoxication Elder Lathrop preached… Attended the yearly meetings of the Tract Society.Domestic an d Foreign Missionary Societies…Conference full and interesting debated the subject of total depravity… Attended the funeral of Elias Curry’s wife living in Deerfield on the Utica Turnpike, the public exercises were attended in the Garrett Schoolhouse… Baptized a child of Jacob Allen’s named Calvin Winthrop…In the evening read Dr Beecher’s missionary sermon just preached at New York….Went to Remsen after Betsy Franklin to life with us for a time returning found Mrs Wilcox more ill At eight in the evening Mrs W was delivered of a son. The child but feeble and the prospect of its living but small…
