DESCRIPTION: Hardcover, 320 pages. Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicholson (London); (2000). The cross may be the most powerful and recognizable symbol in the history of Western civilization. But what are the historical origins of the cross, and what happened to it after Christ\'s crucifixion? In a church outside Rome, a small fragment of wood, neglected for hundreds of years, may hold the answer to these questions and prove fundamental to understanding the real genesis of Christianity. Thiede and d\'Ancona, best selling authors of \"The Jesus Papyrus\", have written an astonishing, revisionist work. \"The Quest for the True Cross\" explores the long-ignored fragment of the Titulus Crucis, the inscribed headboard of Christ\'s cross.

Their claim is a radical challenge to the modern view that all supposedly holy relics are fakes. Thiede and d\'Ancona have amassed evidence that this fragment dates from the time of Christ and was brought to Rome by Queen Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great. According to legend, Queen Helena found the cross in Jerusalem in A.D. 326, on the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stands. Following in Queen Helena\'s footsteps, and drawing together the threads of history, archaeology, myth, science, and religion, \"The Quest for the True Cross\" is a record of a remarkable journey through the ancient world. Much of what we think we know about early Christian faith and the world\'s most potent image will be called into question by this rare and groundbreaking book.

PUBLISHER REVIEW:

REVIEW: Focusing on a long-ignored fragment of the \"Titulus Crucis\", the inscribed headboard from Christ\'s cross, the authors provide evidence that it may date from the time of Christ and was brought to Rome by Queen Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, in AD 328. Their claim is a radical challenge to the modern view that all supposedly holy relics are fakes. Following in Helena\'s footsteps and drawing together the threads of history, archaeology, myth, religion, and science, this journey through the ancient world may transform your beliefs about early Christian faith. Carsten Peter Thiede, German papyrologist, who ran the Institute of German Studies in London, produced documentaries for BBC TV and is now director of the Institute for Basic Epistemological Research at Paderborn, Germany. Matthew d\'Ancona, formerly a senior editor on The Times, is now deputy editor of the Sunday Telegraph.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS:

REVIEW: When did Christians begin to venerate the cross of Jesus? Thiede and d\'Ancona, who stirred up controversy about the dating of the Gospels in The Jesus Papyrus, challenge the prevailing scholarly opinion that the cross became a central symbol only after the emperor Constantine adopted Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century. According to legend, Constantine sent his mother to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where she excavated and brought back to Rome the Titulus Crucis, or the headboard of the cross on which was written the words \"King of the Jews.\"

Using philological, literary and archeological evidence, the authors argue against this legend, claiming instead that the earliest Christians must have begun a tradition of venerating Jesus\' cross. For example, they find the Chi-Rho symbol in papyri from the second century, and on a shard from Bethsaida from the first century. In their view, such discoveries support the claim that the cross functioned as a key symbol in pre-Constantinian Christianity. In addition, the authors discover the Titulus Crucis in a church in Rome and use the same tools to suggest a \"plausible if unprovable\" chronology of the life of this relic.

REVIEW: Fascinating! Such a study as this is long overdue, scrupulously executed and will grip the imagination of believer and non-believer alike. The implications are momentous. A pleasure to read. Thiede and d\'Ancona deserve the wide audience this courageous book will enjoy.

REVIEW: Is a neglected fragment of wood in a minor Rome church a relic of the cross upon which Jesus died and thus the most sensational evidence of Christ on earth since the Turin Shroud? Important and riveting-a book every inquiring Christian, and open-minded skeptic, should read.

REVIEW: Revisionist history that\'s interesting, well-made, and should attract much attention. This is a totally absorbing book.

READER REVIEW:

REVIEW: Carsten Peter Thiede was already a controversial and world-class scholar with his work on the new dating of Mark\'s gospel when he approached this unprecedented and ground-breaking investigation of the Titulus of Santa Croce, in Rome. The Santa Croce Church, having stood on the same plot of land for 1700 years prior, regularly housed said aforementioned titulus for those same 1700 years. A titulus, which, for the uninitiated into this area of interest, is the headboard above criminals\' heads on a cross, who were put to death by crucifixion, a worrisomely merciless practice of the Roman Empire. The titulus from Santa Croce is the one allegedly belonging to Christ\'s cross, a disputed belief, one that Thiede nevertheless strives to make a case for in his newest book.

In said book, Thiede submits some tantalizing and, more valuably, convincing evidence for this titulus to specifically be that of Christ\'s. Thiede presents a huge amount of circumstantial evidence supporting that hypothesis. Why the evidence may not be absolutely conclusive, it does stimulate the next best thing towards solid proof of this titulus being that of Christ\'s: raising the question of a plausible feasibility that the Santa Croce Titulus could be Christ\'s, through an assemblage of circumstantial facts which, together, conclude quite logically its divine connection. A well-written, riveting, spell-binding book which reads like a historical mystery. Highly recommended to all enthusiasts of ancient history.

Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology.

I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the \"business\" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
