Beginner Essential Oil Distillation Apparatus, Kit
The beginner essential oil distillation apparatus consists of a 300mm Graham condenser, (2) 500 ml round bottom boiling flasks (one for boiling and one for distillate collection), a still-head connection adapter, lab support stand, ring clamp, and two-finger clamp. All glassware has 24/40 sized glass fittings for excellent connections.
CAUTION: Always wear proper eye and skin protection when handling glassware and heat!
Other items needed (not supplied in kit):
- Heat source such as a hot plate, heating mantle or gas burner.
- Flexible tubing to connect a water supply to the Graham condenser
Begin by assembling the lab support stand by attaching the support rod to the metal base. Refer to photo for proper placement of clamps and glassware on the lab support stand. Attach water supply with your own hose.
Add plant matter and water to the upper boiling flask. Exact amounts of water and plant matter and length of time of distillation will vary depending on the type of plant used, so make sure to research the specifics before starting. Next, position your heating source (not provided in this kit) so that it effectively heats the boiling flask. Bring boiling flask contents to a boil (approx. 100°C or 212°F).
Plants naturally produce and contain essential oils, which upon extraction by distillation can be collected and concentrated for use in aromatherapy for numerous therapeutic benefits. All plants contain different mixtures of essential oils. Some contain a significant amount of essential oil per overall weight of the plant material, and some contain very small amounts of essential oils per overall weight of the plant material. Proper research into a specific plant of interest will produce information on potential essential oil yields, time length of distillation, optimal harvesting conditions of plant material, and other specifics.
The Beginner Essential Oil Distillation Apparatus is best suited to a hydro-distillation method for extracting essential oils from plants. This involves adding plant material directly to water in the boiling flask. The water and plant material mixture is then heated. As the water begins to boil and turn into steam, the cellular structures of the plant are broken down allowing for the release of the essential oils from the plant material. The steam carries the essential oils into the water cooled condenser resulting in the steam and essential oil mixture cooling back down to their liquid forms. The liquids are then collected from the bottom of the condenser into the collection flask. Note that different plants may require a different length of time for distillation.
Because oil and water separate when mixed together (think of oil and vinegar salad dressing), the essential oils extracted by distillation will form their own layer in the collection flask. Since oil is less dense then water, the oil will form a layer that floats on top of the water layer. This essential oil layer can be drawn off and separated from the water layer. The water layer that is collected from the distillation is called hydrosol and may contain beneficial components depending on the plants used in the distillation. The hydrosol can be discarded if unwanted, or it can be recycled and used as the boiling water for a new round of essential oil distillation.
