About this Item:

Dixon Stansbury Miles (May 4, 1804- September 16, 1862), original, vintage, handwritten official letter (LS) measuring approximately 8.75" x 7.25" referencing an amount of five dollars sent by Dixon for a newspaper subscription. This official letter is not hand written by Dixon, but is hand signed by Dixon with rank.

Dixon Miles was a Union leader born in 1804 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was among the class of 1824 as an infantry student of the U.S. Military Academy. Before the Civil War, Miles spent the years on frontier duty battling Indians. In 1857 he fought against Indians along the Gila River, New Mexico, and against the Navajo in 1858. In 1859 he was promoted to colonel and commander of the 2nd U.S. Infantry, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Miles also spent time during the Seminole and Mexican Wars.

Undoubtedly Miles most significant and well known service came when in September, 1862, he was given command of the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, which stood right on General Lee's supply line. Miles was to hold the area until Union forces arrived, but Harpers Ferry was surrounded by Lee's armies and ultimately Miles had to surrender. During this surrender, Miles was fatally wounded, dying the next day, September 16, 1862. He was buried in Monckton, Maryland. The resulting surrender of 12,419 men was the largest number of U.S. soldiers surrendered until the Battle of Corregidor in World War II.

Letter is in fine condition with only subtle wear and light creases from original folds. Both sides of the letter have pencil identification notations.
